Joseph Joiner Finishes Second in Topless 50; Looking Forward to Snowbird Nationals

Milton, Fla. (Nov. 18, 2009) – Joseph Joiner and the Joiner Racing Team returned to Southern Raceway in Milton, Fla., this past weekend to compete in the first annual Topless 50. After a dominant season that saw him win 10 races at his hometown track, Joiner entered the $5,000-to-win, two-day event with high hopes.

After qualifying fourth and winning his heat race Friday night, Joiner started Saturday’s 50-lap feature from the outside of the second row. Joiner made his way to the second position early in the race and had his sights set on leader Devin Jones. Joiner pressured Jones the majority of the race, but with numerous cautions slowing the field, the 16-year-old driver never found a way around and had to settle for a runner-up finish.

“We had a pretty good run and we’re happy with,” said Joiner of the race. “Of course we would rather win, but it just didn’t turn out that way. The race kind of played in Devin’s favor. The track wasn’t in shape for much passing and we never ran many green laps or got in any lapped traffic. Not to take anything away from Devin, he ran a great race, but I feel like if we got in some traffic I could have got by him.”

The race marks the second time in the past two months that Joiner was in contention to win a major race at Southern but came up short. The other was October’s Derek Henley Memorial. Joiner was in the second position challenging for the lead of the $4,400-to-win race, before he fell out with mechanical problems.

“That’s two races now that we’ve been in a position to win and just didn’t come through. But it’s been a great year for us and I feel like we’ve showed that we’re one of the cars to beat at Southern Raceway. That’s what we wanted to do this year. Be one of the best at our home track so we can now focus on getting better when we travel to other tracks.”

Joiner and his race team have one more race weekend on their schedule before heading into the offseason. The team plans to travel to Gulfport, Miss., on Thursday to compete in the Snowbird Nationals at South Mississippi Speedway. The three-day event will consist of two separate feature races. There will be two rounds of qualifying Thursday night to set the lineups for Friday and Saturday nights’ heat races. Friday night’s feature will pay $3,000 to the winner while Saturday’s winner will take home a $3,500 check.

This will be Joiner’s second visit to the quarter-mile oval. Joiner competed at South Mississippi in October when the NeSmith Late Model National Touring Series visited the track for a two-race weekend. Joiner scored feature finishes of seventh and fifth in what were his first and second starts with the NeSmith Series.

“We’re looking forward to heading back over to South Mississippi this weekend,” said Joiner. “It’s a fun track that really fits my driving style. I think if we can stay out of trouble and not have any mechanical problems, then we should have a car capable of finishing in the top five both nights.”
