Remembrance and Racing at Volusia for 9-11

BARBERVILLE, FL- Saturday, September 11th will be a very special night at Volusia Speedway Park, as racers, fans, and speedway staff, will pause to remember those that we lost on that date in 2001 during the World Trade Center attack. And while we gather to remember, we will also celebrate our freedom with the truly American sport of stock car racing, featuring competition from the Daytona Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram Late Models, the Taylor Racing Products Sportsman Division, and a $500 to win feature race for the Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants Thunder Stocks. The Daytona Antique Auto Racing Association (DAARA) will also be on hand to display and race their vintage race cars.

Last Saturday night the fans saw a competitive field of top Late Models scramble after a $2500 check, as John Kellum caught and passed Mark Whitener on the final lap to seal a spectacular victory. This Saturday it is back to regular points racing for the Daytona Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram Late Models, but don’t think for one minute that means there is less at stake. While Joe Kump remains on top of the points standings, his foothold on the top spot is eroding fast. Donnie Chappell has made steady improvements throughout the season, grabbing a hard fought victory recently and finishing 8th in last week’s competition. Kump was not so lucky last time out, coming home in the 12th spot and thus allowing Chappell to gain more ground. A mere 25 points separates the two, and with the hot shots who were after the extra cash absent it will be a head to head rumble for every point Chappell and Kump can muster.

The last two times out for the Taylor Racing Products Sportsman Division the fans have seen Victory Lane celebrations, but the official results have been in doubt for at least 48 hours after the racing ended. Aaron Barsness has a solid hold on the top spot in the points race, but Shaun Daugharty has been clawing his way toward Barsness’ perch despite the task looking all but impossible. But Stanton Mills has stood in Daugharty’s way for two weeks running, and each time Daugharty has challenged Mills’ wins in tech. The net result of that has been a draw, as Daugharty gained a win and Mills was disqualified the first time around, and this time Mills’ victory stood while Daugharty ended up losing his points and winnings for the night. Obviously both racers are not on each other’s Christmas mailing lists this year, and both will be taking the green flag again this Saturday night. The tech man may want to stock up on energy drinks in preparation for whatever outcome may come on the track, and possibly later as well.

Five hundred dollars will be waiting for the winner of this week’s Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants Thunder Stock feature, and Mike Tovet will most likely be shooting for a repeat of last weekend’s outcome. Tovet and Matt Schell benefited from Chad Scranton’s flat tire on the final lap, as they finished first and second respectively and left Scranton to limp to the checkers in third place. Scranton has been the man to beat recently, and before last Saturday only one other racer had managed to do it.

Meanwhile points leader Scott Mooers wound up having a very unpleasant meeting with the turn one barrier that sent him to the pits on a hook for the night, and put yet another dent in his push to remain near the top of the UMP national points rankings. Scranton will be looking to redeem himself with a victory, while Mooers will have his machine back together and will be looking for his redemption as well.

And history buffs will get yet another shot at seeing the DAARA cars hit the clay at Volusia Speedway Park this Saturday, as vintage race car owners will come from all over the region to race at the south’s fastest half mile. DAARA’s last appearance at VSP proved a little too racy for some, as they wound up damaging their machines against Volusia Speedway’s unforgiving barrier walls. But those accidents go to show that the DAARA cars are not out there turning laps to show off and that the car owners are really racing, and that these old machines still have a lot of speed and competitive fire left in them.

As we remember and reflect on September 11th, Volusia Speedway Park will salute all of our military and emergency responders with free admission this Saturday night with proper I.D. The grandstand gates will open at 5:30PM with heat races scheduled to begin at 7:30. BARBERVILLE, FL- Volusia Speedway Park was back in action on Saturday night after a summer break as the Daytona Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram Labor Day Late Model Shootout headlined an exceptional night of high speed thrills, with $2500 going to the winner of the event. In addition to a strong field of top late models, fans also got a heavy dose of excitement for the Budweiser Modifieds, the Taylor Racing Products Sportsman Division, and the Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants Thunder Stocks.

The 30 lap Labor Day Late Model Shootout had the Daytona Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram Late Models chasing a $2500 check and Mark Whitener, for practically the entire race as “The Magic Man” rocketed to the front and drove away from the rest of the field. Try as he might, “The Locomotive” Johnny Collins could only watch Whitener pull away as the laps ticked off, and Lawton Minchew saw his time in the front runners expire with a spin in turn 4.

There were also some contenders who began the race mired in traffic due to less than appealing starting positions, and as those racers made their way forward the complexion of things at the front began to change. Whitener remained in a world to himself as he blew past the stragglers at the back of the pack, and Ivedent Lloyd slipped from the top three to the top five as the track slicked off, and John Kellum quietly worked his way forward, almost camouflaged by the host of lapped cars that were complicating matters for the leaders. Kellum sneaked into the top five virtually unnoticed, and then into the top three as Whitener’s lead eroded thanks to Labor Day weekend race traffic.

Once Kellum cleared Johnny Collins and set his sights on Whitener, it was a race against the leader and the clock for the new second place runner as the laps quickly approached 30. Kellum caught Whitener with two to go, then made the winning pass in turn one of the last lap to seal a thrilling victory as Mark Whitener drove to the scale house in second place. Johnny Collins hung on to take the third spot and Ivedent Lloyd claimed fourth, as Jackie Nosbisch charged to the checkers in the fifth spot.

As the Budweiser Modifieds lined up for their feature race, many of them were still licking their wounds from Friday night’s brutal affair at the opposite end of the Ocala National Forest, and many were out to right the wrongs of the previous night. Both Garret Stewart and Jeff Mathews failed to complete all of the laps at Ocala, but at least their cars were in relatively one piece while others were not so fortunate. Kyle Bronson was coming off of a victory at Ocala, and was looking for another at Volusia’s fast half mile.

Garret Stewart led from the pole but Mathews snatched the lead away on the first lap. Meanwhile quite a tussle developed between Johnny Collins, Kyle Bronson, Wayne Hammond, and Jamie Carter, as all of them battled for position throughout the race. The one constant was Mathews and Stewart running first and second until a late race caution changed everything with only one lap remaining, bunching up the field and leaving a one lap dash to the checkers.

Stewart had been caught napping on an earlier restart that allowed Mathews to maintain the lead, but this time Stewart was all over “The Repo Man” as the green flew. But so were Johnny Collins and Kyle Bronson, and as that wad of cars rocketed into turns one and two, Mathews was able to hold off Stewart despite the 67 machine having inside position on the 33. So Jeff Mathews collected another victory as Garret Stewart shook his head over being so close and yet so far away. Johnny Collins held on for third place while Kyle Bronson and Wayne Hammond rounded out the top five.

It took days to determine winner of the last Taylor Racing Products Sportsman Division feature race at Volusia Speedway Park thanks to a technical issue that had to be answered via communication with a manufacturer, but in the end Shaun Daugharty picked up a much needed and appreciated win. Aaron Barness still has a firm grip on the points lead, but Daugharty intends to make a race out of it, so as the green flag waved and Chris Day led the field into turn one, Daugharty was right behind him and on a mission.

Stanton Mills began the race in the third row of the starting grid, but had himself in position to overtake Chris Day on a restart on lap 4. That left Daugharty running in the third spot until he was able to also overtake Day, but by that time Danny Vogel had joined the fray at the front and kept Daugharty in third place with a pass for second. Stanton Mills would lead to the checkers with Vogel behind him and Shaun Daugharty following, but once again that is not the end of the story.

A protest was launched, sending both the 57 of Stanton Mills and the 00 of Shaun Daugharty to quarantine and on to the tech shed for a long night of dismantling, measuring, and inspecting. As of Sunday morning no official determination has been forthcoming, as tech officials again will have to research information in order to reach a fair and correct decision. that leaves Stanton mills as the unofficial winner, with Danny Vogel in second place followed by Shaun Daugharty in third. Chris Day is fourth for the moment and Aaron Barsness will wait for news from fifth place.

Chad Scranton has become a dominant force in the Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants Thunder Stocks since mid season, and so far the only driver who has been able to dispute that has been Philip Brown, and with Brown not behind the wheel of the 13 and Scranton starting on the outside of the first row, most everyone expected to see Scranton get another first place trophy. But Scranton’s partner on the first row was Mike Tovet,and Tovet apparently never got the memo stating that Scranton was virtually unbeatable.

There race quickly became a battle between Tovet and Scranton, with Scott Mooers and Matt Schell having an equally tough struggle over the second spot. And on lap 14 the fight between Schell and Mooers got a bit physical, as there was contact between the two on the front stretch resulting in Schell’s 57 bouncing off of the wall and back into Mooers’ 10 car. That sent Mooers flying into the barrier in turn one, trashing the second of his race cars in two nights after a violent encounter with the wall at Ocala the night before.

Matt Schell would continue on to challenge the leaders as Scranton had gotten the better of Tovet, but with the restart leaving a one lap sprint to the finish, Tovet had one last shot at Scranton’s dominance. As the three cars rocketed down the frontstretch on the restart, there was contact that punctured a tire on Scranton’s machine. Tovet assumed the lead with Schell right on his bumper, but managed to hold Matt Schell at bay to win the race. Scranton would limp to the scales in third place, while Robert Donaly claimed fourth and Raymond Wheeler finished fifth.

Volusia Speedway Park will return to action on September 11th as we pause to remember the events on that date in 2001. All emergency first responders including police, fire, and rescue, and all members of the military, will be admitted free of charge with proper I.D. and will see racing action from the Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants Thunder Stocks as they battle for a $500 check. In addition, The Daytona Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram Late Models and the Taylor Racing Products Sportsman Division, will return and be joined by the hard charging 4 Cylinder Challengers, plus the popular DAARA vintage cars. Varnadore & Peacock Claim LM Features at East Bay

Double features for Racecar Engineering Late Models topped a full program as the weekly schedule kicks back in for East Bay Raceway Park. Action is scheduled every Saturday night through December 11.

In the make-up feature from July 24, 12 returned cars took the green for the 25-lapper. Point leader Bryan Bernhardt grabbed the early lead, only to see Travis Varnadore whiz by on lap 3. Varnadore was able to hold back Bernhardt to claim his first feature win of the season. David Schmauss claimed third with Mavrick Varnadore and Ted Erskine rounding out the top five.

The second feature brought 21 cars to the green, but a bad case of yellow feature hit the class. Numerous caution flags prevented the field from getting a rhythm until attrition had wiped away most of the competitors. Just like the previous race, Travis Varnadore and Bernhardt locked into an early struggle, but the wild card was Josh Peacock who didn’t run the first race. Peacock moved to the lead on lap four, leaving the others to scrap for second. It would be Varnadore who would claim the runner-up spot, ahead of Bernhardt, Frankie Erskine Jr. and Paul Gibbs.

The Precision Kia Street Stocks brought a new winner to Victory lane as Billy Carlbert Jr. masterfully held off challenges by Thomas Pratt and Donnie Reed. Pratt’s bid ended with a turn one spin while reed simply couldn’t bypass a determined Carlbert. Point leader Reed had to be satisfied with second. Garry Sheffield was strong through the middle portion of the 15-lapper and ended up second. Jarod Gay added another top five with a fourth and Eric Moon came from18th for fifth. Heats were won by Buck Woodhouse, Thomas Pratt and Dave Floyd. Floyd was unable to compete in the feature as the car broke a right front wheel crossing the finish line in the heat.

The Q Auto & Injury Attorney Limited Late Models opened with Tim Powers and Forrest Gough as heat winners. Both drivers struggled in the feature, getting caught in incidents not of their own making. Alex Boerner had the early lead, but spun collecting Gough who continued from the tail, where he was caught up in another incident. Daniel Woody inherited the lead, but spun collecting second running Tim Gay. Both went to the rear, but gay was on a mission. He managed to reach third by lap 11, then scooted past Scottie Williams and race leader John Bradley with a lap to go. Gay said in Victory lane that he knows the contact through the night bent something in the car but he was happy to be there. Tim Powers rallied from the rear to claim second, ahead of Bradley, Williams and Ricky Land.

East Bay Sprints had plenty of thrills for the near capacity crowd on hand. Early leaders Kurt Taylor and Gene Lasker made contact in the fourth turn, ending Lasker’s challenge. Taylor was able to stay in front for the rest of the laps, picking up his second win of the season. Danny Jones had the best charge to get to second with Tim George, Keith Butler and Rocky Sullivan in the top five. George and Travis Bliemeister picked up heat wins.

A field of 37 motorstats.com 4 cylinder Bombers led to three heats and two features. George Handy, Raymond Vann and Chuck Mathias were best in the heats. Jimmy Odell battled Jimmy Williams for a B main win. The A main saw two rollovers as Patrick Fiore and George Ingram went airborne in separate incidents. Both drivers were unhurt, but the cars were done for the night. In racing action, Johnnie Alexander added a second feature win to his tally, crossing ahead of Raymond Vann, Troy Dittebrand, Kever Raulerson and Thomas Burnside.

Bronson Wins the Modified 30 Lapper at Ocala

OCALA, FL- After a few weeks off to rest and allow nature to rain itself out, race fans returned to Florida’s oldest speedway and witnessed 95 cars in four divisions challenge the toughest 3/8ths mile in the southeast. The Colortyme Modifieds headlined the night with a $1000 to win race that featured a $500 bounty on Jeff Mathews, who has won all but one race in that division in 2010 at Ocala Speedway. Plus the Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks, the Mini Stocks, and the Gladiators, were all racing for double points on the night, which made those races doubly important as the 2010 racing season moves into fall and an eventual end.

Ocala Speedway owner Mike Peters has taken note that Jeff Mathews has been less than cooperative about sharing celebration time in Ocala’s victory lane, so with the Colortyme Modifieds lining up for a scheduled $1000 to win race, he added a $500 incentive for someone else to step up and pose for pictures while holding a checkered flag. That incentive was enough to attract over 30 top modifieds to Ocala, plus prompt some late model heavy hitters to borrow modifieds and get a piece of the action. Even the area legend, Buzzy Reutimann, could not resist the temptation to come to Ocala and get involved in what could be a $1500 payoff.

Dale Murray held the pole position for the start, but a tangle in turn four on the first lap involved several machines and sent Murray to the pits, which moved Jeff Mathews to the pole position for the second try at getting underway. But the bounty on Mathews was an excellent motivator, as “The Locomotive” Johnny Collins blasted his way out front along with Kyle Bronson. And as Mathews tried to reign in those two hot shots, he was forced to contend with a hungry pack of wolves salivating at his back bumper, including Buzzy Reutimann and Jamie Carter.

Ocala Speedway has earned the moniker of the toughest 3/8ths mile in the southeast for a reason, and that reason was more than evident on Friday night. While the racers were more aggressive thanks to Mike Peters’ $500 bounty on Mathews and the $1000 winner’s check, the track was equally unsportsmanlike to the racers and many wound up leaving on a hook. Gary Sexton got the worst of it during a spectacular backstretch tangle that rolled his machine against the wall and red flagged the race. Sexton would walk away to race another day, but his relatively new car will need some serious rehab. Attrition spread throughout the field, and in the end even Jeff Mathews would fall victim to the rugged racing and fail to finish, which nullified the $500 bounty offer.

Kyle Bronson was the toughest of the tough, not only surviving the race but finishing in front of everyone else for the $1000 win, while Jamie Carter also survived a tough outing, but came home in second place behind Bronson. Third place went to Wayne Hammond, who was still running strong with one side of his machine totally ripped away, and who had to fight his way from the rear of the field to the top three. Mark Whitener claimed the fourth spot, and Buzzy Reutimann finished fifth.

The Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks have run tough races all season, and Michael Stalnaker has had his ups and downs through it all. But as the season begins to wind down Stalnaker has returned to top form, and found himself in a heated battle for the top spot in Friday’s feature with David Kinsey. Their tussle was the highlight of another rugged race that saw as many cars drop out as finished, and that featured the night’s other spectacular crash.

The last time that Glenn Vincent raced at Ocala Speedway, his 28 machine ended the night on its roof in front of the grandstand. Vincent walked away from that exciting crash and repaired his battered car, then returned to the site of his misfortune to test the toughness of the track once more. And for the second outing in a row, the tough 3/8ths mile won as Vincent suffered an ugly barrel roll in turn 2, this time trashing the car to where repairs are probably impossible. But once again Glenn Vincent walked away from the mayhem, thanks to good luck plus the use of top quality safety equipment.

In the end, the Amsoil V8 Thunder Stock feature became less about who won and more about who did not, as heavy hitters like Scott Mooers and Chris Fontaine were sidelined by accidents on the track, and a disqualification took the win away from David Kinsey. So Michael Stalnaker was awarded the victory with Chris Shea placing second and Michael Valdez moving up to the third spot. Harold Erickson picked his way through the field and survived more than a couple of brushes with the wall to finish fourth, and Gordon Cade rounded out the top five.

The Mini Stocks have survived a season where the division came close to going into extinction on dirt tracks in Florida and where drama off the track has played out to where the division is as strong as ever at this point in the season. Nineteen Mini Stocks were on hand on Friday night and the racing was some of the best of the season as Keith Briggs suffered a coolant leak that left him on the rear of the field for the start of the feature race. And as one might expect, Briggs was not about to be a follower.

While Briggs was busy fighting his way through heavy traffic, there was plenty of action up front thanks to Charlie Staats, Johnny Zackery, and Rob Underwood. Zackery’s night would not go his way as he was involved in two accidents, the second of which ended his run, but Staats and Underwood ran strong throughout the race, as did Nick Kerr and Paul Combast. In fact, Combast had a starting position that had him mired in traffic for a good portion of the race, but he climbed to the top three and was the second car to take the checkers.

Keith Briggs fought hard through the pain of a bad back to make his way to the point and claim a victory as Combast followed, but Combast’s night would go south from there. A protest was made on Combast’s 19C machine but Combast refused a teardown, automatically resulting in a disqualification under the rules. That moved Rob Underwood up to second place and Charlie Staats up to third, while Nick Kerr and Ray Ethridge were fourth and fifth.

By the time that the Gladiators made their way out for their feature race, they found that the other three divisions had left them with a rough race track that was going to be every bit as challenging as the other competitors in their division, but Casey Feaster was up to the task. Jordan Myers led early but Jerry Taylor fought his way into the top spot by lap 7. That is when Casey Feaster began working on the 31 car in his quest to win, eventually getting the better of Taylor and making another visit to Ocala’s victory lane. Taylor finished behind Feaster, but earned a disqualication after racing ended, which moved up the rest of the field. Matt Shea went home with the second place trophy, while third place went to Devin Walker. Steven Johnson finally had a good night and finished fourth, and Jordan Myers hung on to finish in fifth place.

Ocala Speedway returns to action this Friday, September 10th, with the annual Tribute to 9-11 Heroes Night. Labor Day Late Model Shootout Restarts Action at VSP

BARBERVILLE, FL- Volusia Speedway Park returns to action this Saturday night, September 4th, with the Daytona Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram Labor Day Late Model Shootout, plus further excitement from the Taylor Racing Products Sportsman Division, the Budweiser Modifieds, and the Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants Thunder Stocks. With two weeks spent away from the south’s fastest half mile, the racers are more than ready to feel the rush of dirt slinging, high speed action as the 2010 racing season officially moves into fall.

And while the racers may be more than ready to take on each other and Volusia’s high speed half mile, some may have a need to shake a few cobwebs loose and do some final tweaking on their machines before Saturday’s events. Volusia Speedway Park will open for practice on this Friday, September 3rd, with hot laps by division from 6PM until 9PM, offering the racers that chance, plus giving them a shot at some seat time as well.

When the Daytona Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram Late Models hit the clay for the Labor Day Late Model Shootout, they will be chasing a $2500 check made out to the winner in addition to the impressive first place trophy. Money talks, and racers tend to crank it up a notch or two when the potential for a big payday comes their way. Donnie Chappell has already cranked things up, grabbing a win on August 14th and narrowing the gap between himself and Joe Kump in the points race. Kump’s less than stellar outing on that same night came in the form of debris on the front stretch that punctured a tire, so the Lake Helen racer will be looking for a measure of redemption while chasing the big payout. But other racers will certainly be after the money as well, and may complicate the course to Victory Lane for Volusia’s points leaders.

Jamie Carter has seized control of the Budweiser Modifieds points race, and with the number of races left dwindling, Jeff Mathews finds himself in the role of second best this year. While Carter may be just out of reach at this point, Mathews is not, as Kent Corbin holds down the third spot behind Mathews. Jeff Mathews is one tough customer, and despite his role as second fiddle he certainly can play a mean solo or two in Victory Lane, and has done so. Larry Burkins has also tasted victory, and the agony of a final turn defeat, and will also be a factor in the outcome of Saturday’s race.

The Taylor Racing Products Sportsman Division has seen Shaun Daugharty rise to the top, then take a tumble as misfortunes came his way midway through the season. And yet as the season exits summer and heads into fall, points leader Aaron Barsness finds himself mirror driving as he leads the way and Daugharty fights to gain ground. Barsness had a forgettable night on August 14th while Daugharty had a great one, and if that trend continues things will possibly get tighter at the top.

There is no disputing who is in control of the Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants Thunder Stock points battle, but Scott Mooers is no longer the dominant force when the division goes racing on Saturday nights. Chad Scranton has found the secret to outrunning Mooers and has done so consistently, but Scranton has his own nemesis in the form of Philip Brown. Brown has climbed into the number 13 Thunder Stock when the Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks were not on the schedule, and habitually getting the better of Scranton. No matter what Scranton and Brown do, Mooers will be the champion this season, but Mooers cannot help but worry that his domination of the division is coming to a close, as other racers continually raise the performance bar.

Volusia Speedway Park will open the grandstand gate and welcome back the fans at 5:30PM on Saturday evening, with heat races scheduled to begin at 7:30. Mother Nature Wins at East Bay

Saturday – Aug. 28th, 2010 – Tampa, FL – With 2 weeks off, almost 100 cars showed up tonight to get their racing fix. Heat races began around 6:30 pm when from the North, Mother Nature showed up. After a small shower came through, it looked as if the rain had quit. But, with more Storms in the area, Officials made the decision to cancel the night’s events.

Next Saturday night is Sunshine Speedway Alumni night here at The Clay By The Bay. Along with that, the Racecar Engineering Late Models make their return with Double Features. Also running that night will be the Limited Late Models, East Bay Sprints, Precision Kia Street Stocks and the Motorstats.com 4 Cylinder Bombers.

Also on Thursday, Open Practice for all classes will be held from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm and on Friday, Double Features for Go-karts. So next weekend will be a busy weekend of racing here at East Bay Raceway Park.

$1000 to Win Mods, Plus Double Points at Ocala

OCALA, FL- After a well deserved rest and a few weeks to allow Mother Nature to rain herself out, action returns to Ocala Speedway this Friday night as the Colortyme Modifieds hit the clay in pursuit of a $1000 first place payout. In addition to thrilling modified competition, fans will also see tough racing from the Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks, the Mini Stocks, and the Gladiator Divisions, as they compete for double points toward their respective season championships.

As Ocala race fans should know, “Repo Man” Jeff Mathews has all but run the table on the rest of the Colortyme Modifieds this season at Ocala, winning all but one race. But as the racers go after the $1000 to win prize this Friday night, they will have an extra incentive to take Mathews down a notch as a $500 cash bounty has been placed on the “Repo Man” for this race. Ocala Speedway owner Mike Peters will personally pay the racer who beats Mathews a $500 bonus, which could potentially make this a $1500 night for all but one top mod driver.

One might expect Mathews to control the 2010 points race and he does, but not to the extent that one might guess. Wayne Hammond and Kyle Bronson are a mere 45 and 46 points shy of knocking Matthews out of first place, and both are more than capable of beating him on any given race night. Add the bounty plus the oversized first place payout, and Matthews’ points lead could erode a little this weekend.

The Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks have been a rough and tumble bunch this season, with some races looking more like an enduro than Friday night divisional competition. Michael Stalnaker tops the survivors’ list at present as he has overcome multiple problems on his way to regaining the points lead. Jerrid Bennett may not be in Victory Lane every Friday night, but pure persistence and determination have him just 31 points shy of Stalnaker, and no doubt salivating over the double points night to come. Stalnaker hopes that he has eliminated the gremlins that have burdened the 8 car through the meat of the season, but if one or two are still lurking, Bennett will be poised to take advantage of it.

Defending 2009 Mini Stock Champion Paul Combast holds the points lead as the last Mini Stock Division on dirt hits the clay this Friday night, but Combast is by no means safe from the two pronged attack of Dan and Nick Kerr as they chase him up the points ladder. With double points on the line, Dan Kerr is 21 points out of first place, while Nick follows at 30 points behind Dan, or 51 points out of first. But the last outing for the Mini Stocks saw “Hot Shot” Keith Briggs sporting the swagger and skills that earned him the 2008 Mini Stock Championship, and so far Combast and the Kerr’s have not found the solution to staying in front of the 19T X-Treme Racing machine.

If there has ever been a tight points race in any division at Florida’s oldest speedway, Ocala’s Gladiator Division has had it in 2010. The current points leader is none other than Devin Walker, who assumed the top spot after off the track problems bumped Casey Feaster out of first place. Walker’s lead is barely a toe hold on the top shelf, as EBD Racing’s Matt Shea is just 4 points behind, and Steve Johnson, who led the points race for weeks before falling victim to all sorts of calamities, is 33 out of the top spot. Throw double points in front of these racers and it becomes a nessesity for all of them to win this week, although only one can. That means tough competition, exciting racing, and who knows who coming out on top.

Ocala Speedway will throw open the pit gate at 2PM this Friday, with the grandstands open to the fans at 5PM. Hot laps are scheduled for 7PM with the first heat race taking the green flag at 8PM.
