OCALA, FL- After a few weeks off to rest and allow nature to rain itself out, race fans returned to Florida’s oldest speedway and witnessed 95 cars in four divisions challenge the toughest 3/8ths mile in the southeast. The Colortyme Modifieds headlined the night with a $1000 to win race that featured a $500 bounty on Jeff Mathews, who has won all but one race in that division in 2010 at Ocala Speedway. Plus the Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks, the Mini Stocks, and the Gladiators, were all racing for double points on the night, which made those races doubly important as the 2010 racing season moves into fall and an eventual end.

Ocala Speedway owner Mike Peters has taken note that Jeff Mathews has been less than cooperative about sharing celebration time in Ocala’s victory lane, so with the Colortyme Modifieds lining up for a scheduled $1000 to win race, he added a $500 incentive for someone else to step up and pose for pictures while holding a checkered flag. That incentive was enough to attract over 30 top modifieds to Ocala, plus prompt some late model heavy hitters to borrow modifieds and get a piece of the action. Even the area legend, Buzzy Reutimann, could not resist the temptation to come to Ocala and get involved in what could be a $1500 payoff.

Dale Murray held the pole position for the start, but a tangle in turn four on the first lap involved several machines and sent Murray to the pits, which moved Jeff Mathews to the pole position for the second try at getting underway. But the bounty on Mathews was an excellent motivator, as “The Locomotive” Johnny Collins blasted his way out front along with Kyle Bronson. And as Mathews tried to reign in those two hot shots, he was forced to contend with a hungry pack of wolves salivating at his back bumper, including Buzzy Reutimann and Jamie Carter.

Ocala Speedway has earned the moniker of the toughest 3/8ths mile in the southeast for a reason, and that reason was more than evident on Friday night. While the racers were more aggressive thanks to Mike Peters’ $500 bounty on Mathews and the $1000 winner’s check, the track was equally unsportsmanlike to the racers and many wound up leaving on a hook. Gary Sexton got the worst of it during a spectacular backstretch tangle that rolled his machine against the wall and red flagged the race. Sexton would walk away to race another day, but his relatively new car will need some serious rehab. Attrition spread throughout the field, and in the end even Jeff Mathews would fall victim to the rugged racing and fail to finish, which nullified the $500 bounty offer.

Kyle Bronson was the toughest of the tough, not only surviving the race but finishing in front of everyone else for the $1000 win, while Jamie Carter also survived a tough outing, but came home in second place behind Bronson. Third place went to Wayne Hammond, who was still running strong with one side of his machine totally ripped away, and who had to fight his way from the rear of the field to the top three. Mark Whitener claimed the fourth spot, and Buzzy Reutimann finished fifth.

The Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks have run tough races all season, and Michael Stalnaker has had his ups and downs through it all. But as the season begins to wind down Stalnaker has returned to top form, and found himself in a heated battle for the top spot in Friday’s feature with David Kinsey. Their tussle was the highlight of another rugged race that saw as many cars drop out as finished, and that featured the night’s other spectacular crash.

The last time that Glenn Vincent raced at Ocala Speedway, his 28 machine ended the night on its roof in front of the grandstand. Vincent walked away from that exciting crash and repaired his battered car, then returned to the site of his misfortune to test the toughness of the track once more. And for the second outing in a row, the tough 3/8ths mile won as Vincent suffered an ugly barrel roll in turn 2, this time trashing the car to where repairs are probably impossible. But once again Glenn Vincent walked away from the mayhem, thanks to good luck plus the use of top quality safety equipment.

In the end, the Amsoil V8 Thunder Stock feature became less about who won and more about who did not, as heavy hitters like Scott Mooers and Chris Fontaine were sidelined by accidents on the track, and a disqualification took the win away from David Kinsey. So Michael Stalnaker was awarded the victory with Chris Shea placing second and Michael Valdez moving up to the third spot. Harold Erickson picked his way through the field and survived more than a couple of brushes with the wall to finish fourth, and Gordon Cade rounded out the top five.

The Mini Stocks have survived a season where the division came close to going into extinction on dirt tracks in Florida and where drama off the track has played out to where the division is as strong as ever at this point in the season. Nineteen Mini Stocks were on hand on Friday night and the racing was some of the best of the season as Keith Briggs suffered a coolant leak that left him on the rear of the field for the start of the feature race. And as one might expect, Briggs was not about to be a follower.

While Briggs was busy fighting his way through heavy traffic, there was plenty of action up front thanks to Charlie Staats, Johnny Zackery, and Rob Underwood. Zackery’s night would not go his way as he was involved in two accidents, the second of which ended his run, but Staats and Underwood ran strong throughout the race, as did Nick Kerr and Paul Combast. In fact, Combast had a starting position that had him mired in traffic for a good portion of the race, but he climbed to the top three and was the second car to take the checkers.

Keith Briggs fought hard through the pain of a bad back to make his way to the point and claim a victory as Combast followed, but Combast’s night would go south from there. A protest was made on Combast’s 19C machine but Combast refused a teardown, automatically resulting in a disqualification under the rules. That moved Rob Underwood up to second place and Charlie Staats up to third, while Nick Kerr and Ray Ethridge were fourth and fifth.

By the time that the Gladiators made their way out for their feature race, they found that the other three divisions had left them with a rough race track that was going to be every bit as challenging as the other competitors in their division, but Casey Feaster was up to the task. Jordan Myers led early but Jerry Taylor fought his way into the top spot by lap 7. That is when Casey Feaster began working on the 31 car in his quest to win, eventually getting the better of Taylor and making another visit to Ocala’s victory lane. Taylor finished behind Feaster, but earned a disqualication after racing ended, which moved up the rest of the field. Matt Shea went home with the second place trophy, while third place went to Devin Walker. Steven Johnson finally had a good night and finished fourth, and Jordan Myers hung on to finish in fifth place.

Ocala Speedway returns to action this Friday, September 10th, with the annual Tribute to 9-11 Heroes Night. In appreciation for all of our heroes, all emergency responders and active military will be admitted free of charge with proper ID, and will see action from the Late Models, Tee Pee Tire Hobby Stocks, Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks, and the Gladiators. For more info, or to see more info on the exciting events still to come in 2010, please visit www.OcalaSpeedway.com.

OCALA, FL- After a well deserved rest and a few weeks to allow Mother Nature to rain herself out, action returns to Ocala Speedway this Friday night as the Colortyme Modifieds hit the clay in pursuit of a $1000 first place payout. In addition to thrilling modified competition, fans will also see tough racing from the Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks, the Mini Stocks, and the Gladiator Divisions, as they compete for double points toward their respective season championships.

As Ocala race fans should know, “Repo Man” Jeff Mathews has all but run the table on the rest of the Colortyme Modifieds this season at Ocala, winning all but one race. But as the racers go after the $1000 to win prize this Friday night, they will have an extra incentive to take Mathews down a notch as a $500 cash bounty has been placed on the “Repo Man” for this race. Ocala Speedway owner Mike Peters will personally pay the racer who beats Mathews a $500 bonus, which could potentially make this a $1500 night for all but one top mod driver.

One might expect Mathews to control the 2010 points race and he does, but not to the extent that one might guess. Wayne Hammond and Kyle Bronson are a mere 45 and 46 points shy of knocking Matthews out of first place, and both are more than capable of beating him on any given race night. Add the bounty plus the oversized first place payout, and Matthews’ points lead could erode a little this weekend.

The Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks have been a rough and tumble bunch this season, with some races looking more like an enduro than Friday night divisional competition. Michael Stalnaker tops the survivors’ list at present as he has overcome multiple problems on his way to regaining the points lead. Jerrid Bennett may not be in Victory Lane every Friday night, but pure persistence and determination have him just 31 points shy of Stalnaker, and no doubt salivating over the double points night to come. Stalnaker hopes that he has eliminated the gremlins that have burdened the 8 car through the meat of the season, but if one or two are still lurking, Bennett will be poised to take advantage of it.

Defending 2009 Mini Stock Champion Paul Combast holds the points lead as the last Mini Stock Division on dirt hits the clay this Friday night, but Combast is by no means safe from the two pronged attack of Dan and Nick Kerr as they chase him up the points ladder. With double points on the line, Dan Kerr is 21 points out of first place, while Nick follows at 30 points behind Dan, or 51 points out of first. But the last outing for the Mini Stocks saw “Hot Shot” Keith Briggs sporting the swagger and skills that earned him the 2008 Mini Stock Championship, and so far Combast and the Kerr’s have not found the solution to staying in front of the 19T X-Treme Racing machine.

If there has ever been a tight points race in any division at Florida’s oldest speedway, Ocala’s Gladiator Division has had it in 2010. The current points leader is none other than Devin Walker, who assumed the top spot after off the track problems bumped Casey Feaster out of first place. Walker’s lead is barely a toe hold on the top shelf, as EBD Racing’s Matt Shea is just 4 points behind, and Steve Johnson, who led the points race for weeks before falling victim to all sorts of calamities, is 33 out of the top spot. Throw double points in front of these racers and it becomes a nessesity for all of them to win this week, although only one can. That means tough competition, exciting racing, and who knows who coming out on top.

Ocala Speedway will throw open the pit gate at 2PM this Friday, with the grandstands open to the fans at 5PM. Hot laps are scheduled for 7PM with the first heat race taking the green flag at 8PM. For more info on America’s Dirt Track, and to see the remainder of the 2010 racing schedule, please visit www.OcalaSpeedway.com.

Merritt Island, FL (August 20, 2010) Florida’s newest Dirt Track website is looking for sponsors and for drivers.

“I am in the process now of trying to set up driver profiles for the website, www.floridadirttracknews, where potential sponsors can find potential drivers to sponsor. If possible, and that all depends on how badly the drivers want help, I am asking that they send me a small bio of their racing history with a few photos to put up on the website,” said Publisher Jane Smith.

“Then when sponsors look at the website, they can see and read about the great dirt drivers here in Florida and hopefully help one of them. Even if it is only gas for the weekend or a tire or two, anything does and will help the driver and the sponsor will get his name out there at their hometracks so their sponsor. It is a win-win situation for both.”

“Since acquiring www.dirttracknews.com, Florida Dirt Track News has been getting more than 650 hits per day. Florida Dirt Track News covers all of Florida’s dirt tracks with stories, race results, and a photo gallery of the weekend’s racing action that the track photographers are kind enough to send in to me.”

“With today’s economy and the state that some tracks are in, it is hard to race for sure. But there are still racers and still potential sponsors in the stands that may have a few bucks to help out a driver and hopefully by doing this, it will help both.”

“For $25.00, the bios and photos will be put up for a year on the website for everyone to see. And if the driver comes up with a win, he/she will be highlighted for the week on the site.”

“Florida Dirt Track News is still looking for sponsors also for the site. The site has grown each and every day since last year when it was started. It is a great place to advertise your parts, services, etc. for the dirt track driver. Advertising rates are very reasonable and you can contact racingjls@aol.com for rates.”

Florida Dirt Track News also offers National Dirt news from the World of Outlaws to the All Star Circuit of Champions. And in the near future, it will also offer news from other Southern states dirt tracks from Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, Arkansas, South and North Carolina.

Now we cover Southern Raceway, Northwest Florida Speedway, Hendry County Motorsports Park, North Florida Speedway, Ocala Speedway, Volusia Speedway Park, East Bay Raceway Park, and Putnam County Speedway which is closed at the present time but hopefully reopening in 2011.

For more information on getting your bio up or advertising, please e-mail racingjls@aol.com. And be sure and check out www.floridadirttracknews.com. It is the fastest growing dirt track site in the Florida.

OCALA, FL- As is usually the case during August in central Florida, the rainy season has reached its peak and can make racing on clay a very iffy proposition. And that is a major reason why Ocala Speedway’s owners choose this time of the year stop fighting nature, take some time off, and get some work done. That means Florida’s oldest speedway will be empty of fans and race cars for the next three Fridays, but will reopen on September 3rd to finish out the 2010 racing season.

And September 3rd will be a special night for the Colortyme Open Wheel Modifieds, as they will be competing in a $1000 to win event. In addition to the $1000 payday, Ocala Speedway has placed a $500 bounty on Jeff Mathews, which will pay that $500 bonus to the racer who beats Mathews to the checkered flags. The Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks, the Mini Stocks, and the Gladiators, will all be competing for double points on the night, making their races extra exciting as well.

911 Heroes Night will be back this season on September 10th, with all active military, law enforcement, and emergency first responders, admitted free of charge with proper ID. It will be a night of remembrance, but also a chance to thank all of those who protect our rights and freedoms as Americans, plus the kids will be able to compete in bicycle racing on Ocala’s front stretch at intermission. The Late Models will headline the night’s action, plus there will be exciting racing from the Tee Pee Tire Hobby Stocks, Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks, and the Gladiators.

And September 17th will mark the return of the always popular Church Night and Faster Pastor Racing at Ocala Speedway, as clergy from all over our area climb into race cars and battle each other to help raise funds and awareness for their ministries and churches. Church Night is always an alcohol free night at the track, and church members are encouraged to come out and cheer on their clergy. And while the Preacher Feature might be a big draw, fans will also see action from the Colortyme Modifieds, the Tee Pee Tire Hobby Stocks, the Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks, the Mini Stocks, and the Gladiators.

During the three week summer break, Ocala Speedway owner Mike Peters will be working to finalize plans for upcoming events, as well as do some needed maintenance on the facilities. While some upcoming events are already set, others are still in the negotiating and planning stage, and will be added to the 2010 schedule as soon as details are worked out. One such event is the first appearance of Car Wars on dirt at Ocala Speedway, tentatively scheduled for September 24th. Formerly known as Crash-A-Rama, Car Wars will feature wacky races, demo derbies, and even the first figure 8 race on dirt at Ocala.

Until September 3rd marks the reopening of the southeast’s toughest 3/8ths mile, fans can keep look for schedule updates by going to www.OcalaSpeedway.com and clicking on the 2010 schedule tab. Fans are also reminded that they can register to receive updates via RainedOut.com, a spam free service that sends a email and/or text to your cell phone in case Ocala Speedway cancels racing due to weather. Simply click on the link provided at the bottom of the front page at www.OcalaSpeedway.com, and follow the instructions.

OCALA, FL- For the second Friday in a row, Ocala Speedway was threatened by heavy weather that passed within a mile of the facility, and early arrivals to the pits and grandstands got a refreshing spritz from the passing showers. But as was the case a week ago, nature failed to suitably moisten the clay so the water truck had to finish the job before racing could get underway, with exciting racing from Ocala’s Mini Stocks, Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks, Late Models, and the Gladiators.

Ocala’s Mini Stock Division got first dibs on feature races Friday night, with Jimbo Bird leading the field to the green flag. Bird held the lead for about 10 feet before Johnny Zackery took over, but Zackery’s car had begun smoking during earlier heat racing, and that problem returned with a vengeance in the first laps of the feature. And as Zackery got the black flag for unnecessary mosquito fogging, Keith Briggs assumed the lead and never looked back. If he had checked over his shoulder he might have seen Paul Combast giving chase, but all Briggs was focused on was the lap count and the checkered flags.

The Mini Stocks only paused for one caution period in the race, so lapped traffic was a problem for the leaders as Paul Combast soon discovered. As Briggs shot under the 3D of Dean Kinsey in turn 3, Combast could not follow and got hung up behind Kinsey’s car, possibly stealing his best chance to overtake Briggs. Keith Briggs scored his second win in a row, while Paul Combast settled for second place. Nick and Dan Kerr worked their way to the third and fourth spots, and Buddy Pope rounded out the top five finishers.

Anytime that the Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks hit the track the fans can rest assured that they will be hitting each other as well, and Friday was no exception. Scott Mooers led from the pole, but failed to hold the lead as Jeff Stalnaker Sr. overtook him on lap 3, drawing a huge cheer from the fans. Mike Stalnaker soon joined Jeff in front, and family ties were undone in mere seconds as they battled side by side. But as luck would have it, just as the domestic dispute heated up, contact between the parties involved resulted in enough damage that both Stalnakers, plus Curtis Clark, all went to the pits. Mike Stalnaker managed to return, but Jeff Sr. was done.

The Stalnaker exodus handed the lead back to Mooers, but before he could enjoy it he had Chris Fontaine on his rear bumper, then in his side window, and then in his path. Fontaine drew another large cheer as he knocked Mooers out of the lead for the second time in the race and never looked back, grabbing a win and forcing Mooers to settle for second place. Michael Valdez had a strong run that resulted in a third place finish, while Justin Durbin fought his way forward to claim fourth place, with Chris Shea following for fifth.

Devin Walker had the points lead and the pole as the Gladiators took the green flag on Friday night, but the race became a 15 lap tussle between Matt Shea and a determined Casey Feaster as Walker followed. Shea rocketed to the front with a 3 wide pass on the front stretch, then was passed by Feaster before the lap was completed. Feaster may have been the leader, but Matt Shea made him work to keep it on every lap, especially as they weeded their way trough lapped traffic. And coming down to the final turn shea was all over Feaster, but could not find a way to get past him. Casey Feaster rebounded from the previous week’s misfortunes with a resounding win, as Matt Shea was a very close second. Devin Walker claimed the third spot as Steven Johnson followed in fourth place, and a continuously improving Kyle Morse rounded out the top five.

Nineteen competitive late models wrapped up the night’s action at Ocala Speedway, but as the green flag flew many fans were watching the back of the pack, where Ivedent Lloyd was trying to make a comeback. Lloyd had been dominating his earlier heat race when his driveshaft broke, and after repairs the 21 car was going through the field like a hot knife through butter, climbing all the way to sixth place in just 3 laps of green flag racing.

Meanwhile Mark Whitener was large and in charge, and dominating the race as the leader, while Patrick Williams and Keith Nosbisch squabbled over the second spot. Ryan Mitchell had a strong run going as he alternated between the fourth and fifth place spots, and J.O. Nobles also spent time in the top five, but eventually slipped to sixth late in the race. And after making record work of the majority of the field, Ivedent Lloyd’s advance stalled just outside of the top five.

Whitener was virtually untouchable a scored a decisive victory while Patrick Williams managed to get the better of Keith Nosbisch and finish second as Nosbisch followed for third. Ryan Mitchell hung tough and completed his run in the fourth spot, and Ivedent Lloyd finally managed to get around J.O. Nobles in the final laps to round out the top five.

Ocala Speedway is taking its traditional summer break over the next three weeks, letting the heat and humidity win while the racers, fans, and staff, get a well deserved breather. Racing action will return to Ocala on September 3rd, as Florida’s oldest speedway reopens with a Colortyme Modified $1000 to win race, complete with a $500 bonus to the racer who beats Jeff Mathews to the checkered flags. Fans will also see action from the Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks, the Mini Stocks, and the Gladiators.

Fans are also reminded that contracts are being finalized for many exciting events over the remainder of the 2010 season, including Car Wars on dirt for the first time at Ocala Speedway, and featuring dirt figure 8 racing, on September 24th. Events will be posted on the 2010 schedule at www.OcalaSpeedway.com as they are finalized, so check the website often over the summer break.

by BJ Cavin- Ocala Speedway Media

OCALA, FL- Any betting person would have put money on a rainout for Friday night at Ocala Speedway had they been anywhere near the place at around 5 PM that afternoon, but despite a brief heavy downpour plus plenty of thunder and lightning, the water truck still needed to be called to duty before four divisions could hit the clay. The Colortyme Rentals Modifieds, Tee Pee Tire Hobby Stocks, Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks, and the Gladiators replaced nature’s storminess with their own brand of rock and roll, and kept the crowd cheering throughout the night.

The Tee Pee Tire Hobby Stocks were anointed the division to open feature racing, and Daniel Miller Jr wasted no time in declaring that the 99 machine was the one to beat. While Cory Hupp gave him a fight over it, Miller grabbed the lead and fended off Hupp’s efforts while points leader Dean Jarvis sparred with a few others behind them. Jarvis had his hands full with a determined Philip Brown, who came to Ocala speedway looking to run at the front but had to get past Jarvis in order to get there. Meanwhile Heath Walker was fighting to get into the top five and finally achieved that status, then immediately developed issues on the back stretch that ended his night.

After some struggles in the mid season, Daniel Miller Jr has come on strong the last two outings, and scored another convincing win on Friday night with Cory Hupp in fast pursuit for second place. Dean Jarvis had a fight on his hands the entire race but came home in the third spot, and Philip Brown grabbed fourth place just behind him. And after deliberately starting at the rear in his new race car, Paul Combast finally got a feel for his new Hobby Stock and drove it to a fifth place finish.

Ocala’s Gladiator Division had reason to get aggressive as their points leader, Casey Feaster, was MIA on the night, and with the Gladiators running second on the night’s program, they got to have a feeding frenzy over Feaster’s points lead with everyone watching. The result was a race that featured lots of contact and gave the fans plenty to cheer about. Larry Langston took control early, and along with Steven Cox they dominated almost the entire race. Meanwhile Steven Johnson had another round of lousy luck befall him, as he failed to turn left and plowed into the turn one wall early on.

Langston beat everyone to the checkers as Cox and Matt Shea squabbled over the second spot. Matt Shea won that battle in the last 50 feet of the race, which had a definite effect on what would happen later. Langston’s celebration lasted only as long as it took for him to arrive in tech, where his car was disqualified
and Matt Shea was declared the race winner. That brought Steven Cox up to second place, and then a second technical DQ for Jerry Taylor brought Devin Walker up to third place. Kathie Fisher moved up two spots to fourth place, and Ken McCloud climbed to fifth.

As the Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks began their 20 lap adventure, Scott Mooers looked to have the race figured out as he rocketed to the lead and tried to drive away. But as is usually the case with the Thunder Stocks, contact comes with the territory and yellow flags tend to keep everyone in touch with the lead pack. Michael Stalnaker had what looked like an absolutely atrocious starting position in the 14th spot, but the green flag was his signal to begin an often frustrating, but determined trek toward the front.

Things came to an abrupt halt on lap 6 when Glenn Vincent got out of shape in turn four, slammed the wall, then flipped his car down the frontstretch in a spectacular mishap. That drew a red flag and certainly got the fans’ attention as the car lay on its top against the wall just short of the flagstand, but Vincent managed to climb out and make his way on foot back to the pits while the track crew righted what was left of the car and dragged it out of the way.

Michael Stalnaker never gave up in his quest to chase down Scott Mooers, gaining 13 positions and with five laps remaining in the race was right up to Mooers’ back bumper. After a brief caution, the two had three laps to settle the score, and Stalnaker gave Mooers more than he could handle. Stalnaker made the pass cleanly on the white flag lap, and with Mooers all but under his car Michael Stalnaker registered a hard fought win with Mooers settling for second place. Eddie Lake had been in the fight up front for most of the night, but came home in the third spot after Mooers and Stalnaker’s battle developed. Willard Driggers followed Stalnaker through the field and gained 19 positions to finish fourth, while Jerrid Bennett had another rough night and survived to place fifth.

The Colortyme Rentals Modifieds had all sorts of problems just completing the first lap of their feature race, as tangles and mishaps, including Larry Mott’s wild ride on top of the turn two wall, resulted in 4 separate complete restarts. But Wayne Hammond and Jeff Mathews remained on the front row throughout it all, and by the time that they actually got to complete a lap both had run through their respective bags of starting tricks.

Hammond and Mathews exchanged the lead early on, but on lap 8 Hammond careened into the turn two wall as the caution flew for a separate incident on the opposite end of the track. The front end of Hammond’s car bounced up and onto the wall, causing enough damage that it was towed to the pits for the night, and leaving Roger Crouse and Jamie Carter to find a way to deal with Mathews. Carter passed Crouse and went to work on Mathews, but “The Repo Man” held fast and took the win. Jamie Carter was second, while Kent Corbin recovered from an earlier mishap to climb back to third place. Tim Zackery also had to overcome some adversity in his fourth place posting, and Roger Crouse slid back to fifth late in the race.

Ocala Speedway will be back in action on August 6th before taking a summer break, with exciting racing from the Late Models, the Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks, the Mini Stocks, and the Gladiators. The summer break will last for three weeks, with racing returning on September 3rd. Keep an eye on www.OcalaSpeedway.com as some exciting additions to the racing schedule will be announced during the coming weeks.

OCALA, FL- The historic Ocala Speedway returns to action this Friday night, July 30th, with four exciting divisions poised to do battle on the toughest 3/8ths mile in the southeast. The Colortyme Rentals Modifieds will headline the night, and race fans will also see intense action from the Tee Pee Tire Hobby Stocks, the Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks, and the Gladiators. All four of these divisions feature heated points races at this point in the season, and with limited races left on the 2010 schedule.

Jeff Mathews still has the top of the 2010 Colortyme Modified points list in his grip, but Wayne Hammond and Kyle Bronson are both tied at just 25 points shy of Mathews. In addition to the double threat tied for second place, Mathews also must keep tabs on Kyle and Chip Owen, who are 45 and 52 points out of first place. Mathews was a winner the last time out, beating Wayne Hammond to the checkers on July 9th and thus protecting his lead, but can he continue to keep the competitors at bay for the remainder of the season? Should Mathews encounter some bad luck, the points race could become superheated in a flash.

The Tee Pee Tire Hobby Stocks had been a two man showdown at the top for weeks on end, but recently Dean Jarvis and Heath Walker have stumbled a bit while others have surged into the top spots in feature races. Jarvis remains the top points man at just 20 in front of Heath Walker, but Daniel Miller used a win on July 17th to leapfrog up to third place and tie William Edwards, putting both of those drivers only 60 points out of the top spot, and 40 short of bumping Walker out of second place. Daniel Miller has had an up and down season so far, but if he can continue to win he might be able to stir things up at the top of the heap.

Michael Stalnaker began the 2010 Amsoil V8 Thunder Stock season strong, but then had a string of misfortunes that set him back during the middle part of the season. But if last Friday night was any indication, the new current points leader may be over all of that and running downhill toward the end of the season. Stalnaker survived what turned out to be a brutal battle among some of the heavy hitters, and some of those hitters failed to see the checkers because of the hitting. This Friday night those racers will be back with dents banged out and mechanical repairs completed, and may have some grudges to settle as well. Jerrid Bennett is one of those who became a victim last weekend, and is just 16 points behind Stalnaker at the top. And if anyone will return with something to prove, Bennett is the one to watch as it was his DNF and Stalnaker’s win that bumped him out of the top spot.

Last Friday night Steven Johnson had to borrow Steven Cox’s race car in order to run with the Gladiators at Ocala, and Johnson wound up with the short end of just about everything that he encountered. Meanwhile Casey Feaster had topped Johnson in the points standings, and topped everyone else with yet another win, as Devin Walker managed to vault past Johnson into second place behind Feaster. Those developments have left the Gladiator points race even tighter than before, as Devin Walker has chipped it down to a 9 point difference between himself and Casey Feaster at the top of the heap. Meanwhile Steven Johnson and Matt Shea are all knotted up at 20 points out of first place, as Shea steadily continues to climb the points ladder and Johnson keeps slipping back. Depending on who does what this Friday night, a lot could change or everything could remain the same, and Devin Walker now finds himself poised to take over the top position should Casey Feaster falter.

Ocala Speedway will open the pit gates to the racers and crews at 2PM this Friday, with the grandstand gates open for the fans at 5PM and racing at 8PM. For more information, or to see the complete summer racing schedule, visit www.OcalaSpeedway.com.

OCALA, FL- With Tropical Storm Bonnie moving across Florida to the south the weather forecasters had seemed sure that at least some rainfall would hamper things at the historic Ocala Speedway on Friday night, but most fans and racers ignored all of that and experienced a near perfect summer evening of exciting action. In fact, not one drop of rain fell at the track, and the storm to the south generated a cooling breeze from the east, as four exciting divisions took on Ocala’s tricky 3/8ths mile and kept the fans on the edge of their seats.

The Late Model Division has been absent from America’s Dirt Track since early June, and J.O Nobles was more than ready to defend his 2009 Late Model Championship after the long layoff. But in order to do so, he had to contend with some heavy hitters, such as Mark “Magic Man” Whitener and “The Professor” Ivedent Lloyd, who were just as hungry to take on Ocala as Nobles was. Early on it was John Koller with the advantage as some of the big dogs had less than perfect starting positions, but J.O. Nobles quickly climbed to second place and began working on Koller, as Ivedent Lloyd dealt with a traffic jam back in the 6th spot. Skeeter Kedmon also looked strong before Nobles blew past to challenge Koller.

Some mid race cautions played into the outcome as they kept everyone in touch with each other and opened some doors for more powerful cars to make their way forward. Ivedent Lloyd found a route through the congestion and made his way to 5th place just as J. O. Nobles snatched the lead from Koller, and Mark Whitener also began picking his way into the top five. By the last 8 laps Lloyd had caught Nobles and was giving the 2009 champ everything he had, but on lap 20 Lloyd skated high in turn 2 as Nobles scampered away. Totally unperturbed, Lloyd used the next lap to catch Nobles again, and as they took the white flag he moved outside of the yellow 18 to position himself for the final pass.

The throng of fans who usually cheer Ivedent Lloyd to victory had a change of heart on the final circuit and cheered wildly for J.O Nobles as he managed to hold off the local veteran and take the win. Lloyd settled for an extremely close second, while Mark Whitener followed in the third spot. John Koller finished just outside of the top three in the fourth spot, and Skeeter Kedmon raced his way to a fifth place finish.

After returning to the Mini Stock Division in 2010, it seemed like Keith Briggs had nothing but misfortunes. In fact, the 19T car had not finished a race all season, and had been absent altogether from the last few outings on the track. Briggs managed to turn things around and got a much appreciated finish on the night, while his misfortune seemed to transfer to the defending 2009 Mini Stock champion, Paul Combast. Combast never completed only one lap in the feature race as his engine detonated in turn 4, ending his night.

Keith Briggs rocketed past David Whitner on the first lap and took the lead while Ray Ethridge had his new car climbing through the top five early on all the way to second place. Nick and Dan Kerr hooked up with each other and made their way forward as well, with Nick getting by Ethridge and trying to chase down Briggs in the final laps. But Nick Kerr was short on chase time and had to settle for second place, as Keith Briggs dominated the entire race on his way to a win. Ray Ethridge snagged third place, while Dan Kerr placed fourth and David Whitner closed out the top five.

When the Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks took on Ocala Speedway, fenders and bumpers were expendable on a night where it took three heat races and a B main to whittle down the feature line up to 24 contenders. And the whittling down continued as the green flag fell on the feature race, as most of the top contenders ended up battling for limited real estate in the top five, sometimes going four wide and banging their way around the track. Some survived the ordeal while others did not, but the fans absolutely loved the action that it created.

Through it all, Michael Stalnaker managed to muscle his way to the front and take the lead, while Jason Gamble fell in behind Stalnaker as they tried to distance themselves from the mayhem just behind them. Some of the victims of the brawl were Scott Mooers, Curtis Clark, Jerrid Bennett, and Chris Shea, while Austin Kirkpatrick, Eddie Lake, Gordon Cade, and Jesse Corbitt, all survived it and managed to salvage top ten finishes despite spins, bangs, bumps, and dents.

Micheal Stalnaker took control of the race and outpaced Gamble to the checkers, returning to the winner’s ranks after some misfortunes of his own over the past few weeks. Gamble’s second place finish was also impressive as he managed to outpace Eddie Lake, who took third despite an all out effort for more. Gordon Cade took his lumps during the race, yet fought back from it all to finish fourth, and Ronald Lentz did the same as he rounded out the top five spots.

Casey Feaster came to Ocala Speedway as the 4 Cylinder points leader at the tracks at both ends of the Ocala National Forest, and he immediately made it obvious that he intended for it to remain that way. Matt Shea has been steadily climbing the Gladiator points ladder at Ocala and had no intention of letting Feaster do anything, and with both starting in front it made for a battle that dominated every lap of the race. Both drivers took turns at the point, and while their fight was intense, it was fought cleanly with virtually no contact throughout.

Behind Feaster and Shea, Devin Walker had the best seat in the house for their epic battle, choosing to stay out of it for the most part and hope that one of the two leaders would either make a mistake, or eliminate each other. And Steven Johnson was in the hunt as well, but in a borrowed car since his having mechanical difficulties, and unfortunately for Johnson, he didn’t exactly return the car in the same condition in which he borrowed it.

The Feaster and Shea dispute was never settled until the final turn of the race, as Casey Feaster managed to use the low line in turn four to get to the flagstand first. Matt Shea happened to be the second place car when the checkers flew, and Devin Walker scored a solid third place finish on the night. Kyle Morse has improved his game in recent weeks, managing to hold off Nathan Rhoades as they finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Ocala Speedway will be back in action on July 30th as the Colortyme Rentals Modifieds will headline four divisions of exciting action. Also on top will be the Tee Pee Tire Hobby Stocks, plus more fender banging action from the Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks, and the continuation of the intense points battle in the Gladiator Division. For details, plus the complete summer schedule of racing action at America’s Dirt Track, please visit www.OcalaSpeedway.com.

by BJ Cavin- Ocala Speedway Media

OCALA, FL- Ocala Speedway will present another night of top notch dirt racing action this Friday, July 23rd, as the Late Model Division returns after a lengthy layoff. In addition to the Late Models, fans will be treated to more fender banging action from the Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks, plus the only Mini Stock Division on dirt in Florida, and the highly competitive Gladiator Division will be back with a new 2010 points leader.

Fans have been anxiously awaiting the return of the Late Model Division as the last feature race was back on June 4th when Phillip Cobb became the latest winner of the Annual Powell Memorial. And as the Late Models return to the southeast’s toughest 3/8ths mile, the 2010 points battle is still up for grabs. Mark Whitener holds onto the top spot, but 10 other racers are all within 98 points of first place. Phillip Cobb is just 22 points back, J.O. Nobles is only 29 points shy of the top spot, and young Christian Augspurger is a mere 41 points short of first place. Needless to say, any mistakes or misfortunes in the top tier of the points chart could spell trouble and let gravity take over, so the leaders will be watching their backs while those who are chasing them are beginning to salivate for their own taste of the top. That makes for exciting and tough racing this Friday night, and a strong group of top late model racers will be on hand to take part in the feeding frenzy at the top.

The Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks have the reputation of being the toughest division racing at Ocala Speedway, and with good reason. On any given Friday night, it is likely that as many as half of the 20 or so cars that begin the feature will not finish it, and those that do make it to the finish rarely arrive unscathed. And seven racers are within reach of unseating the top dogs in the season points battle going into Friday’s feature race, as Jerrid Bennett maintains a toe hold on first place. Michael Stalnaker is lurking just 12 behind him, and EBD Racing’s Brian and Chris Shea are 40 and 42 points out of first place. Meanwhile Scott Mooers continues to score solid finishes at Ocala in his quest to remain in the top three of the UMP DIRTcar national rankings.

The adventures of the Ocala Speedway Mini Stocks continued two weeks ago when yet another dramatic chapter was written in their up and down season. Defending Mini Stock Champion Paul Combast collected a win when a protest caused a tear down in post race tech that led to a DQ, and everyone else bumped up the finisher’s bracket one notch as a result. The DQ also helped Combast feel a bit more secure at the top of this season’s points heap as Dan Kerr now trails by 27, and Nick Kerr is 63 points shy of first place. So as the Mini Stocks return this Friday, there might be a hint of resentment hanging around which could translate into more action on the track.

The Gladiator Division saw their points leader take a tumble last Friday as Steven Johnson failed to finish the race and Casey Feaster passed him on his way to the top of the points. Feaster’s new position as Gladiator points leader gives him the unique distinction of leading the 2010 points totals at Ocala Speedway and at Volusia Speedway Park as well, but his grip on the top at Ocala is tenuous at best. Feaster leads Steven Johnson by a mere 5 points, and Devin Walker is just one point behind Johnson. And all of the above might do well to watch Matt Shea, as he is only 19 points out of first place and very capable of beating all of them on any given Friday.

The pit gate will open at 2PM this Friday at Ocala Speedway with the grandstand opening at 5PM. Early arrivers will be treated to hot laps before the heat races begin at 8PM. For more information, please visit www.OcalaSpeedway.com.
